The Battle of Adwa was the climactic confrontation of the First Italo-Ethiopian War. By the late 19th century, European powers were engaged in the "Scramble for Africa," a period of intense colonization. Italy, a relatively new unified nation, sought to establish a colonial empire in the Horn of Africa. Its ambitions collided directly with the ancient, independent Ethiopian Empire under the leadership of Emperor Menelik II.
Adwa proved that European colonial powers were not invincible. It served as a beacon of hope for Africans under colonial rule and Black Americans fighting Jim Crow segregation.
