: The film was overwhelmingly panned by critics. It holds a very low approval rating on review aggregators like Rotten Tomatoes. Critics noted that despite Roland Joffé's credentials as an Oscar-nominated director ( The Mission , The Killing Fields ), the film leaned too heavily into predictable genre tropes without adding meaningful artistic value.
Jennifer awakens inside a concrete, subterranean cell. The narrative primarily functions as a two-person chamber piece after she discovers a second captive, Gary (played by Daniel Gillies), in an adjacent room. Together, they endure a series of sadistic psychological and physical trials orchestrated by an unseen captor via cameras and intercoms. The film attempts to pivot from a standard survival horror into a psychological thriller by introducing a late-game narrative betrayal, exploring themes of forced dependency, trauma bonding, and voyeurism. 2. The film was produced by After Dark Films, with a budget of $17 million. However, Captivity is perhaps best remembered not for its content but for the massive controversy surrounding its marketing campaign. In March 2007, before the film's release, a series of billboards in Los Angeles and taxi-top ads in New York City caused a public uproar. The ads featured four distinct panels depicting actress Elisha Cuthbert in various states of peril, labeled "Kidnapping," "Captivity," "Torture," and "Termination". The graphic nature of the imagery, including what appeared to be a limp body, was considered in extremely poor taste by the public and officials. Following a barrage of complaints, the distributor, Lionsgate, ordered the ads to be taken down.
Directed by , Captivity was a departure from his usual historical dramas. The film was written by Larry Cohen, a veteran of horror and suspense, and Joseph Reitman.
