Chkdsk On External Drive Fix
Sometimes, Windows itself interferes with scanning external drives. You must scan the drive from outside Windows.
If CHKDSK cannot fix the drive, or reports it is in RAW format, you may need to use advanced disk management tools.
Ensure the physical lock switch on the drive (if any) is off, or clear the read-only attribute via diskpart . chkdsk on external drive fix
Sometimes, you will see a message saying: "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.(Y/N)"
Type Y (Yes) and press Enter . Restart your computer with the external drive plugged in. Windows will run the scan before launching the desktop. Ensure the physical lock switch on the drive
"CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives"This occurs when the file system is so badly corrupted that Windows can no longer recognize it as NTFS or exFAT. In this case, CHKDSK cannot help. You may need to use data recovery software to pull your files off before reformatting the drive.
(Optional): Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary, ensuring no other processes interfere with the fix. Confirm Dismount/Restart : Windows will run the scan before launching the desktop
Surprisingly, you can sometimes force CHKDSK on a RAW drive if the MBR (Master Boot Record) is intact.
Use list disk -> select disk x -> clean (Warning: this wipes the drive) to re-initialize it.
