The word Philokalia (Φιλοκαλία in Greek, Filocalia in Spanish and Romanian) is a compound of two Greek words: philia (love) and kallos (beauty). The title thus signifies "the love of what is beautiful," "the love of the good and beautiful," or simply "the love of beauty". This beauty is understood not merely in aesthetic terms but as the transcendent source of life and the revelation of Truth. The term was first used as a title by Saints Basil the Great and Gregory of Nazianzus for an anthology they compiled from the writings of Origen, and the compilers of this later collection consciously revived that earlier title. Romanian-speaking readers will find that the translation by the great theologian (completed from 1946 onward) is perhaps the most complete and widely available "filocalia completa." Stăniloae's edition expands significantly upon the original Greek compilation, adding commentaries and notes that have made it a classic in its own right. As Stăniloae wrote in his preface to the first volume: "The word 'Philokalia' means the love of beauty, of a beauty which is also goodness. This collection is a great anthology of Eastern ascetical and mystical writings composed by Holy Fathers and ecclesiastical writers between the 4th and 14th centuries". He further notes that while the collection primarily addresses monks, in the Orthodox Church there is no clear line of separation between the monastic life and Christian life in general.
